Material: Newlands- Harding Fairy Floss (Group E) ** 4 (5-5-6-7) 2 oz balls

1 spare needle or cable needle

1 pair Size 4 needles for ribbing

1 pair Size 00 needles OR THE SIZE NEEDLES YOU REQUIRE TO KNIT TO THE TENSION GIVEN BELOW.

Tension: 2 1/2 st = 1 inch

Instructions are for Size 4, changes for sizes 6, 8, 10 and 12 are in parentheses. The finished chest measurement of the cardigan buttoned is 25 (26- 28- 30- 32) ins.

BACK: With Size 4 needles, cast on 34 ( 36- 38- 40-42) sts. Work in rib of K 1, p 1 for 3 ins. Change to Size 00 needles and work even in stockinette until back measures 10 1/2 (11- 12- 13- 14) ins from beg, ending with a purl row. Armholes: Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then dec 1 st each side every knit row until there are 24 (26- 28- 30- 32) sts. Then work even until armholes measure 5 (5 1/2- 6- 6 1/2- 7) ins, ending with a purl row. Shoulders: Cast off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 4 (4 -5 -5 -6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Place remaining 6 (8- 8- 10 -10) sts on a holder for neckband.

LEFT FRONT: With Size 4 needles cast on 22 (22 -24 -26 -28) sts. Row 1: K 1, * p 1, k 1; repeat from * to last 3 sts, k 3. Row 2: K 3, p 1, * k 1, p 1; repeat from * to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows for 3 ins, ending with Row 2. Change to Size 00 needles and work as follows: Row 1: K 6, (6- 7- 8- 9) sts, p 1, k 8, p 1, knit to last 3 sts, k 3. Row 2: K 3, p 3 (3- 4- 5- 6) sts, k 1, p 8, k 1, purl to end. Row 3: K 6 (6- 7- 8- 9) sts, p 1, place next 2 sts on a spare double pointed or cable needle and hold in back of work, knit next 2 sts, knit the 2 sts from spare needle, place next 2 sts. on spare needle and hold in front of work, knit next 2 sts. Knit the 2 sts. from spare needle, p 1, knit to end. Row 4: Same as Row 2. Repeat these 4 rows until front measure same as back to underarm, ending with a purl row. Continuing cable and border as established up entire front shape armhole as follows: Cast off 2 sts from armhole edge once, then dec 1 st at same edge every knit row 3 (2- 3- 3- 3) times to 17 (18- 19- 21- 23) sts. Then work even until armhole measures 2 inches less than back armholes to shoulders, ending with a knit row. Neck Shaping: (wrong side) Knit the 3 border sts and place on a holder. Now continue on remaining sts decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row 3 (3- 4- 5- 6) times to 11 (12- 12- 13- 14) sts. Work even (if necessary) until armhole measures same as back armholes to shoulders. Shoulders: Cast off 5 sts. from shoulder edge once, then 6 (7- 7- 8- 9) sts once. Mark places on border for 6 buttons, placing bottom marker in center of waistband, allowing for top marker in center of neckband, and the other 4 spaced evenly between.

RIGHT FRONT: Cast on and work to correspond with Left Front, reversing all shaping, starting borders at beg of first row, casting off for armhole and shoulder on purl rows, beginning Neck Shaping on a knit row and work buttonholes in border to correspond with markers on Left Front border as follows: Beg at Front edge, k 2, cast off 1. On following row cast on 1 st over st cast off on previous row. Sew shoulder seams, easing in fullness at top of cable.

NECKBAND: Pick up 41 (41- 43- 45- 47) sts around entire neck edge, including those on holders. Keeping the 3 border sts each side in garter, work even in rib of k 1, P 1 for 4 rows, working a buttonhole as before in 2nd row of right front border. Cast off loosely in rib.

SLEEVES: With Size 4 needles, cast on 16 (18- 20- 22- 24) sts. Work in rib of k 1, p 1 for 2 1/2 ins. Change to Size 00 needles and work in stockinette increasing 1 st each side every 4th row to 24 (26- 28- 30- 32) sts. Then work even until sleeve measures 11 (12- 13- 14- 15) ins fron beg or desired length to underarm, ending with a purl row. Shape Cap: Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every knit row until 14 sts remain, then 1 st each side every row until 8 98- 10- 12- 12) sts remain. Cast off.

FINISHING: Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew on buttons. DO NOT BLOCK.
