Join, being careful not to twist sts. K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 4 inches. DIVIDE FOR HEEL AND INSTEP. Change to No. 2 needles and Nylon and, starting at beg of a round, turn and P 30 sts for heel; sl remaining 18 sts on a holder to be worked later for instep.

HEEL: Row 1: * K 1, sl 1, repeat from * ending K 2. Row 2: Purl. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 1/2 inches, ending with Row 1. TURN HEEL: P 17, p2 tog, P 1, turn; sl 1, K 5, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 1, turn; sl 1, P 6, P 2 tog, P 1, turn; sl 1, K 7, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 1, turn; sl 1, P 8, P 2 tog, P 1, turn.

Continue in this manner, working 1 st more each time, until all sts have been worked, ending with a K row – 18 sts on needle. Pick up and K 18 sts along side of heel piece; on second needle, working on sts of instep, K 3, inc 1 st in each of next 12 sts, K 3; on third needle pick up and K 18 sts along other side of heel piece and K 9 sts from heel onto this same needle. There are now 27 sts on each heel needle and 30 sts on instep needle. Starting at centre of heel, SHAPE HEEL GUSSET: Round 1: On first needle K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K 1; K 30 sts of second needle; on third needle k 1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to end of round. Round 2: Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 15 sts on each heel needle. FOOT: K round and round until foot measures 2 inches less than desired finished length, measuring from centre back of heel. SHAPE TOE: Round 1: On first needle K to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1; on second needle K1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1; on third needle K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to end of needle. Round 2: Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 5 sts on each heel needle, ending with first needle. Put all heel sts onto one needle. Break off yarn, leaving a 12 inch end. Weave heel and instep sts tog. Block.
