Last November we took a road trip to Miami.
Everyone had days off for the Thanksgiving weekend and we wanted to see the Keys.
Couldn’t live in Florida and never experience the Keys.
After a good nights sleep in Miami we were up at sunrise ready to go.
Pearl was on her perch… and looking a little leery.
Seems like every time she goes on a road trip with the whole gang…. we end up at a large body of water.
She hates water.
And I’m sure she can sense the large amount of water around us…even if she can’t see it.
Traffic thru the Keys was a steady stream of cars… moving at a steady pace… and we had a ways to go to make it to mile 0.
There were spots where you could pull off and take a look around.
Part of the old road to the Keys still in place and runs along the new highway.
You can walk along it for miles.
Miles and miles of ocean…. Sometimes dotted with islands.
Lots of little islands… Most privately owned and occupied.
Small towns… with a laid back feel…
Loved the small houses… Aged but strong… They had weathered many a hurricane.
All along the way… thru these little towns… with their small houses…. as we drove by…
We heard “Happy Thanksgiving” from the families and friends who had gathered in the front yards for their feast.
A few invited us to stop awhile and have a bite to eat.
The people are special too.
Key West was busy…. lots of people out and about… on foot… bicycle… scooter… motorcycle and car. Paid for a parking place for the rest of the day and joined the masses on foot.
Wish we would have taken more pictures… but it really was impossible without getting people in them.
But the experience was wonderful.
Lots of little unique shops… great eats… and history.
Had to walk by the Hemingway House on the way to the marker for the Southernmost, Point, Continental, U.S.A.
Loved the chickens roaming around.
Kicked a fallen coconut along the street… got attached and had to bring it home.
Thought we would get a pic at mile marker 0 but many families were waiting so we moved on.
To Margaritaville… Had to stop in this restaurant…
Jimmy Buffett playing on the big screen… Island ambiance… and great food.
Wanting to catch the sunset we found Fort Zachary Taylor State Park had a beautiful view.
A perfect ending of a perfect day.
We caught the 0 mile marker… from the truck… on the way out of town.
Will miss the laid back… friendly Florida Key feel. Next visit we plan on staying longer….
